Christians Meditate?
Who knew!
Meditation has always been an integral part of Christian practice. However, we locked it away in the attic of our tradition about 500 years ago when Enlightenment sensibilities took over the Western mind.
To Enlightenment people, the universe was becoming a precise and mechanical place, governed by absolute principles, and containing singular, irrefutable truths. Consequently, religious practices like meditation that build on a a different view of universe fell out of fashion. Meditation embraces a universe of mystery, paradox, and uncertainty, all of which made Enlightenment-era people uncomfortable.
But we no longer live in a precise, absolute universe. In the last 100 years science has shown us that it is a relative, not an absolute place. It is an illusory, not a solid place. It is an uncertain, not a precise place.
Consequently, our souls find themselves once again hungry for religious practices that embrace mystery and uncertainty. The tradition of meditation does just that.
We are finding real life in re-embracing the ancient, Christian, contemplative practices.
We’d love you to join us.
